Self-Propelled Compactor Operations

Course Overview

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a self-propelled compactor to perform spreading, levelling and compacting operations. It is designed for those working in site-based roles across construction, mining and infrastructure industries.

Please note, this unit alone does not provide sufficient skill to independently load and unload equipment. Personnel must either complete or be assisted by someone who has completed RIIHAN308F Load and Unload Plant (or equivalent). Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements may vary between states, territories and industry sectors, and should be confirmed with the relevant state jurisdiction prior to enrolment.

Areas of Competency

On completion of this course you will have the skills and knowledge to:

Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities.
Identify, obtain and implement signage traffic management requirements according to standard operating procedures and safe work practices.
Select required propelled compactor equipment and confirm suitability for work activities.
Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fires, accidents and emergencies.
Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement of work activity.
Identify faults or defects and rectify or report within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures.
Drive and operate self-propelled compactor using techniques suited to equipment capabilities, site and work conditions, and according to workplace procedures.
Engage and disengage the compacting device.
Identify, remove or manage contaminants in accordance with safe work practices.
Perform work activity within operating capacity of the equipment.
Park up, shut down, secure and carry out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures.
Prepare the self-propelled compactor for relocation.
Move the machine between worksites, observing relevant codes and traffic management requirements.
Assist loading and unloading machine from float/trailer as required by workplace procedures.
Conduct housekeeping activities.
